[tʃiːf, englisch] der, -s/-s, allgemein: Haupt, Oberhaupt, Häuptling; Chef, Leiter. - Chief Justice, in den USA der Aufsicht führende Richter der letztinstanzlichen Gerichte der Einzelstaaten und Vorsitzender in den Sitzungen der Supreme Courts. Der Chief Justice of the United States ist der Präsident des obersten Bundesgerichts (Supreme Court of the United States). - Lord Chief Justice of England, in Großbritannien der Vorsitzende der Queen's Bench Division des zentralen Obergerichts (High Court) in London; er ist kraft Amtes Mitglied des Appellationsgerichtes Court of Appeal (Civil and Criminal Division) und oberster Richter in Strafsachen. In der Rangfolge der höchsten Richter steht er an zweiter Stelle, hinter dem Lord Chancellor, vor dem Vorsitzenden des Court of Appeal, dem Master of the Rolls.
